Answer: The one act play ‘The Proposal” is full of humorous element. The characters in the play behave ridiculously. Lomov comes to propose to Natalya. But he cannot talk in a straight forward manner. He beats about the bush. He starts quarrelling with her over a piece of land. When he comes back, he quarrels about the superiority of his dog. Chubukov is also a humorous character. He knows that Lomov has come to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Even then he quarrels with him. We laugh at the words used by them and their behaviour. The sudden marriage of Lomov and Natalya creates laughter. Chubukov puts his daughter’s hand in Lomov’s in a foolish manner. Lomov is a comic character. His complaints about his poor health provoke laughter. Thus the play gives us a lot of laughter.

(नाटक ‘The Proposal’ हास्य के तत्वों से भरपूर है। नाटक के पात्र मजाकिया ढंग से व्यवहार करते हैं। लोमोव नाताल्या के साथ शादी का प्रस्ताव लेकर आता है। लेकिन वह सीधे रूप से बात नहीं कर सकता है। वह इधर-उधर की बातें करता है। वह भूमि के एक टुकड़े को लेकर उसके साथ झगड़ने लग जाता है। जब वह वापस आता है तो वह अपने कुत्ते की श्रेष्ठता के कारण झगड़ता है। शुबुकोव भी एक हास्य पात्र है। वह जानता है कि लोमोव उसकी बेटी का हाथ माँगने आया है। फिर भी वह उसके साथ झगड़ा करता है। हम उनके द्वारा प्रयुक्त शब्दों और उनके व्यवहार पर हँसते हैं। लोमोव और नाताल्या की अचानक हुई शादी हँसी पैदा करती है। शुबुकोव मूर्खतापूर्ण ढंग से अपनी बेटी का हाथ लोमोव के हाथ में पकड़ाता है। लोमोव एक मजाकिया पात्र है। खराब स्वास्थ्य के बारे में उसकी शिकायतें हास्य पैदा करती हैं। इस प्रकार से यह नाटक हमें ढेर सारा हास्य उपलब्ध कराता है।)
